green-building-logoSpecified Building Products is a member of the U.S. Green Building Counsil and makes it a point to specifically represent manufacturers that have made environmentally-conscious design a priority in their product development efforts.  We choose products that purposefully support the United States Green Building Council’s mission for transforming the way buildings and communities are designed, built and operated which enable an environmentally and socially responsible, healthy, and prosperous environment promoting and improving a better quality of life.  LEED certification (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is becoming an industry stamp of approval among building owners, architects, engineers and contractors. True Leaders in the industry look to innovate and create cutting-edge, high performance buildings, homes and neighborhoods.  In fact, the USGBC invests over $30 million a year to maintain, operate and improve LEED and its customer delivery. No other rating system has an infrastructure that comes close to LEED.

What makes a product LEED Certified?

First  a project must go through a certification process which involves five primary steps:

  • Choose –          Which of nine possible rating systems to use.
  • Register.         Registration and payment.
  • Submission   Application submission and payment of certification review fee.
  • Review.           Application review. Review processes differ slightly for each project type.
  • Certify.            Receive the certification decision

The LEED Rating Systems

Within each rating system there are unique groups of requirements for each rating system that are applied to projects that are submitted for LEED certification. Each requirement group is geared towards the unique needs of a project or building type.  The points from each category are totaled to create a final score for the project and this final project score determines its level of LEED certification.  The higher the score, the higher the certification level earned. There are several credit categories for a LEED certification.  The main LEED credit categories are as follows:

  • Sustainable sites credits – encourage strategies that minimize the impact on ecosystems and water resources.
  • Water efficiency credits – promote smarter use of water, inside and out, to reduce potable water consumption.
  • Energy & atmosphere credits promote better building energy performance through innovative strategies.
  • Materials & resources credits encourage using sustainable building materials and reducing waste.
  • Indoor environmental quality credits promote better indoor air quality and access to daylight and views.

It is not an easy task to attain a LEED certification.  This is why Specified Building Products is proud to work with those companies who are motivated to make as positive an impact as possible on the environment in which we live.
