Fire Door 911

One main reasons to install fire doors is to increase the chance that occupants, employees and customers have an opportunity to escape in the event of a fire.  A fire can spread quickly through a building in just a matter of minutes.  Although they are designed to save lives, Fire Doors should not be relied on as the only method of preparation for a disaster.  You should take all precautions to prepare your employees for a disaster including having a fire evacuation plan which is posted on each floor and practiced regularly.  This will ensure employee familiarity with the proper procedures to follow, the evacuation route and designated meeting place.

fire doorsAccording to the USFA, commercial fires start for many of the same reasons that a residential fire starts:

  • Cooking
  • Electrical or Heating Malfunction
  • Arson
  • Smoking
  • Improper Storage

As a business owner it is important to be aware of these causes but also to make sure you have the proper safety solutions in place to help save the lives of those you employ.

According to the NFPA Journal,  Fire protection-rated doors “provide critical protection to protect exit enclosures and compartmentalize buildings and stop the spread of fire, smoke, and toxic gases.”  NFPA 80 is the national standard regulating the installation and maintenance of devices used to protect openings in walls, floors, and ceilings against the spread of fire and smoke within buildings.
Fire Doors are mandatory in many commercial settings.  They are needed where there is a publicly displayed EXIT sign and when the door leads to a stairwell.  There are many additional places where fire doors can be installed.  Fire doors come in many styles including:
  • Horizontal Fire Shutters
  • Side Coiling Fire Doors
  • Overhead Coiling Fire Doors
  • Counter Fire Shutters

They can be installed in the wall, ceiling and floor to block off entry and exit ways allowing building occupants to safely exit the building.  Over the years they have undergone the transformation of time  from the heavy gray doors to a more aesthetically pleasing and accommodating style more likely to match your building decor.

Regardless of your choice of style, color, visible or hidden accessories, egress or no egress, having them in place is the most important thing to do.  To discuss your Fire Door needs, call the Specified Building Products team at  (877) 903-9090
