Lead The Way With LEED

April 5, 2016 Leave a comment

If you follow our company, you have heard us time and time again, mention LEED. Whether we are providing our door or daylighting solutions, we are conscious in providing our clientele with the best possible means to get LEED certified. However, what does LEED actually means?

The bases of LEED is about sustainability and efficiency. LEED encourages improved solutions that are not only better for our environment but for the community as a whole. As we look to reduce our carbon footprint, the LEED certification evaluates various areas for sustainability. These areas are assigned points, and the final total equals one of the four levels. Whether certified, silver, gold, or platinum, these levels describe the achieved efficiency of a building.

No matter if you are building a home or a commercial skyscraper in a metropolis, a LEED certification is available for all buildings. The benefits of not only building but residing, and working in a LEED building far outweighs any negatives. Therefore, once you go LEED, not only will you be helping the environment, but your pockets will thank you for the reduction in bills.

Solatube SkyVault Series

In recent studies conducted on various aged subjects, it was determined that natural light is better for your vision than artificial light. Not only is natural lighting better for your eyes, but it enhances your vision and depending on your age, helps strengthen your sight. With such great benefits, how can builders incorporate natural lighting into spaces where it might seem impossible? The answer is, Solatube SkyVault Series.

Solatube SkyVault Series uses state-of-the-art technology to transfer sunlight from the rooftop level to high output tubular daylighting devices. During this process, the sunlight travels through the world’s most reflective tubing and once it reaches its’ destination, it provides an enormous amount of daylight to a large space. This lighting will replace your artificial lights, and you will never look back. But don’t take my word for it; here is a quote from Kermit Ferrer the Vice President of Distribution Planning, Capital and Properties at Macy, Inc.:

“We have been using Solatube Daylighting Systems for over a decade and we continue to be impressed with the quality and performance, especially the new SkyVault Series. The amount of light delivered by these new units is truly incredible, allowing us the opportunity to turn off our electric lights during the day, and reduce our peak demand load. More importantly, the natural light creates a better work environment for our most important asses – our people.”

Have your building decrease their carbon footprint by installing daylighting solutions. Whether it’s the SkyVault Series for your large buildings or if you require something smaller, we have it all. Contact one of our consultants for more information on daylighting solutions.

Means of Egress

December 17, 2015 Leave a comment

All buildings have codes for a means of egress. At Specified Building Products Corporation we make sure we are aware of the required building codes for your establishment.

What is a means of egress?

A means of egress is an available path for a person to leave a building, structure or space. This path must be clear and the means of exiting “cannot be subject to locking from the side that people will be leaving.”

A means of egress consists of three different parts:

  1. Exit access: a path from any location within a building to an exit.
  2. Exit: typically a door leading to the outside or an enclosed stairway in a multi-story building.
  3. Exit discharge: a path from the exit to the public way.

In most establishments, the exit is also the entrance. In other establishments, when that is not the case, the International Building Code requires at least two means of egress from all buildings and spaces. Buildings or spaces with 500 or more occupants must have at least three means of egress and lastly, buildings or spaces with more than 1,000 occupants are required to have at least four means of egress.

Do you scan for the exits when you go into a new building? Do you know the exits of the buildings that you frequent? If you do not, you should!  Learn more about means of egress from the International Building Code

In terms of design and functionality, the McKeon Self-Opening Grille has both. The Self-Opening Grille dismisses the illegal use of security gates and removes unsightly swinging door frames. In the event of an emergency, the Self-Opening Grille provides an egress path and in the event of a non-emergency, security is provided without the use of electricity or battery back up systems. Check it out in action below!
